Welcome to the Scottish Society of Ottawa (SSO). We’re a not-for-profit organization that celebrates the links between Scotland and the National Capital Region, Eastern Ontario and all of Canada. We were founded in 2012 to revive and rejuvenate the historic ties between Canada and Scotland.  We use special events and educational programs to highlight Canada’s and Scotland’s shared history and connect to the continuing development of Scotland. More than five million Canadians claim Scottish heritage. In the early 1800s, Scots helped settle eastern Ontario and built vibrant communities named after the places they left behind – Glengarry, Lanark, Perth and Renfrew, to name just a few. The waves of immigration that created a blood link between Canada and Scotland crested in the 1960s and 1970s. The Scots brought their love of Scottish music, dance, history, sport and literature, and the SSO keeps alive those Celtic connections. The SSO’s flagship event is an annual, free New Year’s Eve party – Hogman-eh! It was first held December 31, 2012, as a Hogmanay street party at Ottawa City Hall. Over 5,000 people enjoyed our rendition of the excitement of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay on the world famous Royal Mile.

Throughout the calendar year, the SSO also celebrates Rabbie Burns Day, commemorates St. Andrew’s Day, hosts a Scottish Breakfast in the spring, and organizes The Great Canadian Kilt Skate, an event which began in 2015  and is spreading to other cities across Canada. The SSO also promotes itself through SSO-sponsored Whiskey Tastings, key sporting events (Scottish Day at the Senators, The Ottawa Fury etc.), The Perth Kilt Run (June) and the Glengarry Highland Games (August).General membership to the SSO is free. VIP membership entitles people to a 10% discount and first access to all SSO hosted, ticketed events. The cost is $20 for individuals or $30 for families (in the same household) per year. Join here
